Exploring White Privilege: Moving from Resistance to Resilience through Yoga and Meditation with Kimber Simpkins and Katherine Roubos
Saturday, November 12, 12:30-4:30pm @ Ed Roberts Campus
Suggested Donation $20
Join us for a supportive and connecting afternoon of yoga, meditation, somatic exploration and collective conversation while we explore how white privilege is felt and understood in our bodies, minds, and hearts. Understanding how we, as white people, embody and enact this oppression also highlights ways to interrupt these personal and systemic patterns in support of racial justice.
Together we will practice tools to stay steady and remember our worthiness in the midst of discomfort, allowing us to become better listeners, allies, and co-conspirators within the movement for racial justice. We’ll also offer resources and compassion exercises to support our growing awareness of white privilege in our lives and in the world.
Welcome 2017 with Kimber and community at Yogakula
We’ll honor the passing year and embrace the next with the full capacity of our hearts in all the joy and sorrow. Registration link coming soon.

Module 2 August 25-27 Sept 8-10 Sept 22-24 Oct 13-15 Nov 3-5 Nov 17-19 Dec 8-1
In the 100 hour Immersion (Module 1) with Richelle Donigan and Kimber Simpkins, we’ll dive into how yoga help us be more engaged, compassionate, understanding, self-caring, and willing to act on behalf on social justice. You’ll learn to engage with your own vision and self-understanding to reinforce a profound connection between yourself and spirit. Every aspect of yoga we explore will be through a social justice lens. While deepening your knowledge of alignment, anatomy, the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, the chakras, and the history of yoga, we’ll challenge ourselves to understand how these teachings relate to internalized oppression, privilege, community building, colonization, and what’s happening on our front steps. Our amazing line up of speakersand teachers includes Shahara Godfrey (EBMC and Spirit Rock), Shirley Johnson (yoga teacher and psychotherapist), Jean-Marie Moore (Anasa Yoga), Kat Roubos (MSW), and more to be announced soon.
In the 100 hour Teacher Training (Module 2) we’ll bring everything from the Immersion to bear as we examine how to teach yoga grounded in personal practice, community, and social relevancy. You’ll learn to share yoga with sensitivity to trauma, to culture and history, and to how students show up in their bodies and in the world. Many of our speakers from Module 1 will return to share their wisdom around how to show up as mindful, engaged, and respectful yoga teachers in our lives.

“I didn’t think I ‘needed’ this workshop. I thought I had a decent relationship with my body, yet over the course of the workshop I became aware of the myriad ways in which I internalize negativity and undermine my body (and therefore myself) on a daily basis. It was powerful to realize that transforming negativity could have such a profoundly beneficial effect on me (and those around me), daily, lastingly.” -S.Z
“Kimber’s open and generous discussion of her body issues–and that of the other women in the workshop–helped me understand my own and taught me easy ways to overcome them. Highly recommended for anyone who would like a better relationship with their body.” —Tiffany W.
